To mock, deride, or deceive; Hifil: to trifle with someone through ridicule or falsehood; Hofal: to be deceived.
A verb of interpersonal deception that moves between mockery and outright fraud. In the Samson cycle, Delilah repeatedly accuses him: 'you have mocked me' (Judg 16:10, 13, 15) -- Spanish 'te burlaste' captures the scornful ridicule. But the same Hifil form describes Laban's economic deception of Jacob, changing his wages ten times (Gen 31:7), and Pharaoh's stalling with Moses (Exod 8:29). Job 13:9 asks pointedly whether one can 'deceive God as one deceives a mortal.' The single Hofal in Isaiah 44:20 diagnoses the idolater's self-delusion: 'a deceived heart has led him astray.' The root may relate to Arabic dalla ('to act coquettishly'), suggesting an origin in playful manipulation that darkened into serious fraud.

2. to deceive, mislead — To deceive, mislead, or delude someone into believing what is false (Hifil). Genesis 31:7 uses it of Laban's repeated economic fraud against Jacob -- 'he has deceived me and changed my wages ten times.' Exodus 8:29 warns Pharaoh not to 'deal deceitfully again.' 3. to be deceived (passive) — To be deceived or deluded (Hofal passive). Isaiah 44:20 delivers the prophetic diagnosis of idolatry: 'a deceived heart has turned him aside' -- the worshiper cannot deliver himself because he cannot even recognize the 'lie in his right hand.' Spanish 'engañado' marks the passive state. This single occurrence completes the verb's semantic arc from active mockery through deliberate fraud to the resulting state of delusion. 1×
