A foundational verb of reliance and confidence, batach covers the full spectrum from active trust directed toward God or human protectors, to an intransitive state of feeling secure or at ease. The Qal active sense dominates Scripture, appearing over a hundred times in exhortations to trust in the Lord (Ps 37:3, Prov 3:5). Yet the stative use warns against complacency — the people of Laish dwelt 'secure' and unsuspecting (Judg 18:7). The Hifil causative, rarer but theologically potent, describes figures like Hezekiah's adversaries who 'make others trust' in false promises (2 Kgs 18:30, Jer 28:15).
1. trust in, rely on — The dominant active sense: to place trust, confidence, or reliance in someone or something. Overwhelmingly directed toward God in the Psalms (Ps 28:7, 'I trusted in him and was helped'), this sense also extends to human alliances and fortifications (Deut 28:52, 2 Kgs 18:19). 2. feel secure, be at ease — The stative-intransitive sense: to feel secure, be at ease, or dwell in careless confidence, without a directed object of trust. The classic example is the people of Laish living 'secure and unsuspecting' (Judg 18:7, 10, 27). Job 40:23 uses it of the hippopotamus feeling secure even when the Jordan surges.
