εὐαγγελ-ίζομαι G2097
To announce good news, preach the gospel; in the passive, to have good news proclaimed to oneself.
A distinctly biblical term built from the root meaning 'good message,' used throughout the New Testament for the activity at the heart of early Christian mission: proclaiming glad tidings. In the angel's announcement to Zechariah (Luke 1:19) and to the shepherds (Luke 2:10), the word carries its fullest sense of heaven-sent good news. Jesus himself applies it programmatically in Luke 4:18, quoting Isaiah 61. The passive voice, seen in passages like Matthew 11:5 and Hebrews 4:2, shifts attention to the recipients -- the poor, the sick, and those who hear but must also receive with faith.
Senses
1. proclaim good news — To actively proclaim or preach good news, whether the kingdom of God or the gospel broadly. This is the dominant use across the New Testament (47 of 55 occurrences). Spanish 'anunciar buenas nuevas' and German 'Evangelium verkuendigen' both preserve the 'good news' root. Key passages: Luke 4:18 (Jesus' manifesto), Acts 8:35 (Philip to the Ethiopian). The middle-voice form emphasizes the herald's personal engagement with the message. 47×

2. be evangelized, receive good news — To be evangelized -- to have good news proclaimed to oneself, used in passive constructions where the subject receives the proclamation. In Matthew 11:5 and Luke 7:22 Jesus tells John's disciples that 'the poor have the gospel preached to them,' making the recipients the grammatical focus. Hebrews 4:2 warns that hearing alone is not enough; the message must be mixed with faith. French and German translations often collapse this into the same verb, but the Greek passive marks a meaningful theological shift from agent to recipient. 8×
