To lap or lick — lapping water with the tongue (as dogs or Gideon's soldiers), or licking a surface (blood, dust).
A vivid physical verb capturing the tongue's action against liquid or surface. In the famous test of Gideon's warriors (Judg 7:5-7), God sorts the army by who 'laps water with his tongue like a dog' versus who kneels — only the three hundred lappers are chosen. The other cluster involves dogs licking blood from surfaces: Elijah's grim prophecy that dogs would lick Ahab's blood (1 Kgs 21:19), fulfilled at Samaria's pool (1 Kgs 22:38). Spanish distinguishes these nicely: 'lame' (he laps, present) for the water-drinking context, and 'lamieron/lameran' (they licked) for the blood-licking scenes.
