To gasp, pant; figuratively to long for eagerly or to hasten
A verb grounded in the visceral experience of labored breathing. Isaiah 42:14 pairs it with nasham as God declares 'I will pant and gasp together,' while Jeremiah's wild donkeys stand on bare heights and 'pant for air' (Jer 14:6). The physical act of panting becomes a metaphor for intense desire in Job 7:2, where a servant 'longs for' the shadow, and in Psalm 119:131, where the psalmist opens his mouth and pants for God's commandments. Ecclesiastes 1:5 presses the image further: the sun 'hastens' back to its rising place, panting like a runner completing its circuit.
Senses
1. pant, gasp (literal breathing) — Physical panting or gasping for breath. In Isa 42:14 God breaks long silence with the imagery of a laboring woman: 'I will pant and gasp at once.' Jer 2:24 depicts a wild donkey in heat snuffing the wind, and Jer 14:6 shows wild donkeys gasping on barren heights. Spanish 'jadearon' ('they panted') and 'aspira' ('breathes in') capture the raw physicality. Ps 119:131 bridges literal and figurative: 'I opened my mouth and panted' -- bodily gesture expressing spiritual hunger. 5×

2. long for, yearn (metaphorical desire) — Figurative longing or yearning -- the physical gasping transferred to intense desire. Job 7:2 compares a suffering man to a servant who 'longs for' (yishʾaf) the shade, and Job 36:20 warns against 'longing for the night.' Spanish 'anhela' ('yearns') and 'anheles' ('you might yearn') shift entirely from respiratory to emotional vocabulary, confirming the metaphorical transfer from body to soul. 2×

3. hasten, rush — Hastening or rushing eagerly, an extension of panting-while-running. Ecclesiastes 1:5 applies it to the sun: 'it hastens (shoʾef) to the place where it rises,' picturing the sun as a breathless runner completing its daily circuit. Spanish 'anhelando' retains the panting nuance even as the sense moves toward speed and urgency, bridging the physical and temporal dimensions of the root. 1×
