To tear off, tear apart, or rescue; ranges from stripping ornaments to rending prey to delivering from foes
A verb whose physical core is the violent motion of tearing away. In Genesis 27:40 Isaac tells Esau he will 'tear off' the yoke from his neck, and in Exodus 32:2-3 the golden earrings are torn away for the calf. The same forceful image extends to a lion rending prey (Ps 7:2; Nahum 2:13) and to branches snapped off a vine (Ezek 19:12). Remarkably, Aramaic and Syriac cognates push the word toward 'rescue' and 'redeem,' and this semantic thread surfaces in Psalm 136:24 and Lamentations 5:8, where God tears his people free from their oppressors.
