Conj-w | V-Hitpael-ConjImperf-2fs  |  15× in 4 senses
To lay bare, uncover, strip; also to pour out or empty a vessel; reflexively to strip oneself or spread out.
At its heart this verb means to remove what covers — whether clothing, walls, or the contents of a container. Rebekah 'emptied' her jar at the well (Gen 24:20), the Psalmist cries 'lay bare!' against Edom's destruction of Jerusalem (Ps 137:7), and Isaiah warns that God will 'lay bare' the foreheads of Zion's daughters (Isa 3:17). The pour-out sense may seem distant from stripping, but both share the idea of exposing or releasing what was contained. French 'dénuder' captures the stripping sense, while Spanish 'derramar' (to pour) and 'arrasar' (to raze) show how the language branches from one root image.

Senses
1. lay bare, uncover, strip (Piel) To lay bare, uncover, or strip: the core Piel sense of removing a covering to expose what lies beneath. Used of stripping a person bare (Isa 3:17), laying foundations bare by tearing down walls (Hab 3:13), and the passionate cry 'Lay bare! Lay bare!' against Jerusalem's destroyers (Ps 137:7). French 'dénuder' and Spanish 'arrasar' both point to forceful, thorough exposure.

2. pour out, empty To pour out or empty a vessel, an extension of the uncovering image applied to liquid contents. Rebekah 'emptied' her water jar into the trough (Gen 24:20), the Levites 'emptied' the collection chest (2 Chr 24:11), and the Servant 'poured out his soul to death' (Isa 53:12). Spanish 'derramar' (to pour) and 'vaciar' (to empty) confirm the liquid-transfer sense.
