To come to an end, cease, perish, be swept away; causatively, to bring to an end, consume, or sweep away in divine judgment
A verb of termination and destruction. The Qal describes things or people ceasing to exist — the wicked are 'swept away by terrors' (Ps 73:19), houses of ivory 'come to an end' (Amos 3:15), and the memory of Purim 'shall not cease' from among the Jews (Esth 9:28). The Hiphil turns this into active divine judgment: God declares 'I will utterly consume' (Zeph 1:2) and 'I will gather them for destruction' (Jer 8:13). Spanish distinguishes 'fueron arrebatados' (were swept away) from 'los consumiré' (I will consume them), neatly tracking the Qal-Hiphil split.

Senses
1. come to an end, perish, be swept away (Qal) Qal forms meaning 'to come to an end, cease, perish, be swept away.' Ps 73:19 shows the wicked swept away by terrors, Amos 3:15 declares houses of ivory will come to an end, Isa 66:17 warns of those who will perish together, and Esth 9:28 affirms that the memory of Purim shall not cease. Spanish 'fueron arrebatados' (were swept away) and 'cesará' (shall cease) capture the range from violent destruction to quiet termination.

2. bring to an end, consume, sweep away (Hifil) Hiphil causative forms meaning 'to bring to an end, consume, sweep away' as an act of divine judgment. In Zeph 1:2 God announces 'I will utterly consume everything from the face of the earth,' and in Jer 8:13 'I will gather/consume them.' Spanish 'los consumiré' (I will consume them) and 'quitaré' (I will remove) both convey the active, judgment-bearing force of the causative stem, distinguishing it from the passive perishing of the Qal.
