The Qal stem preserves the concrete physical action of stripping off sandals (Deut 25:9) or drawing out the breast for nursing (Lam 4:3). 4. tear out or plunder — Piel with forcible extraction: to tear out stones or plunder. Leviticus 14:40-43 describes tearing out contaminated stones from a house wall, while Psalm 7:4 uses the image of despoiling or plundering. 5. withdraw or retreat — Qal intransitive: to withdraw or retreat from a situation. A single occurrence in Hosea 5:6 describes God having 'withdrawn' Himself from faithless Israel. The Arabic cognate khalasa (withdraw, retire) supports this reflexive sense of pulling oneself away.
