To turn, incline, trace out (of a boundary line); to mark the course of a border
A technical verb of land survey and boundary description, appearing almost exclusively in Joshua's tribal allotment narratives. It describes the way a boundary line 'turns' or 'inclines' as it traces its course from one landmark to the next. Five of its six occurrences fall in Joshua 15 and 18, marking the borders of Judah and Benjamin, while a sixth appears in Joshua 19:13 for Zebulun. The multilingual evidence is telling: English renders it 'marked' or 'marked out,' Spanish uses 'trazó' (traced, drew), and French 'marqua' -- all converging on the idea of delineating a path.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The standard boundary-tracing sense: a border 'turns' or 'inclines' from one point toward another. Used repeatedly in the Judah-Benjamin border descriptions (Josh 15:9, 15:11, 18:14, 18:17), where the boundary curves around hills and valleys. Spanish 'trazó' (traced) and English 'was marked' both capture the cartographic precision. The verb takes directional complements -- 'from ... to,' 'toward' -- specifying the boundary's course. 5×

2. sense 2 — A closely related but distinct usage where the boundary 'extends' or 'goes out' toward a destination, as in Joshua 19:13 for Zebulun's border reaching toward Rimmon and Neah. English 'marked out' and Spanish 'extendiéndose' (extending) suggest slightly more linear directionality than the curving motion of sense 1, though the underlying action remains boundary delineation. 1×
