To rush, run about, charge; figuratively to long for, crave restlessly
A vivid verb of energetic, often aggressive movement -- rushing, charging, ranging about. Joel 2:9 pictures locust-armies rushing through a city; Nahum 2:4 has chariots careening in the streets. Proverbs 28:15 compares a wicked ruler over poor people to a charging bear. But the same restless energy turns inward in Psalm 107:9 and Isaiah 29:8, where the soul 'rushes' with unsatisfied craving. The Spanish split between 'correr' (run) for the physical sense and 'anhelar' (yearn) for the metaphorical one neatly maps the two poles of this word.
Senses
1. rush, run about, charge — Aggressive physical movement: rushing, running about, charging forward. Locusts rush through the city in Joel 2:9 (paralleled with 'they run'), plunderers rush upon spoil in Isaiah 33:4, and a wicked ruler is a ranging bear in Proverbs 28:15. The Hitpalpel intensification in Nahum 2:4 describes chariots careening wildly. Spanish 'correr' and French 'couler' both anchor the sense in rapid motion. 4×

2. long for, crave (of the soul) — A metaphorical extension of rushing turned inward: to long for, crave, be restless with desire. Used of the soul that longs for water in Isaiah 29:8 (paired with 'weary' and 'empty') and Psalm 107:9 (paired with 'hungry'). Spanish 'anhelar' (to yearn) and German 'Sehnsucht' (longing) reveal how translators shift from external motion to internal restlessness -- the same verb captures a body charging forward and a soul straining toward what it lacks. 2×
