Dominion, sovereign authority; Aramaic term for ruling power, especially God's eternal reign in Daniel.
An Aramaic noun used exclusively in Daniel to denote sovereign dominion and ruling authority. It describes both human and divine kingship, but its theological weight falls overwhelmingly on God's eternal reign: 'His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away' (Dan 7:14). The word appears in Nebuchadnezzar's doxologies acknowledging divine sovereignty after humbling experiences (Dan 4:3, 34) and in Darius's decree that all must tremble before the God of Daniel, 'whose dominion shall be to the end' (Dan 6:26). Daniel 7 uses it repeatedly to contrast the temporary dominion of beastly empires with the everlasting dominion given to the Son of Man and the saints of the Most High (Dan 7:6, 12, 14, 26–27).

Senses
1. dominion, sovereign authority Sovereign dominion or ruling authority (שָׁלְטָן), an Aramaic noun confined to Daniel. German 'Herrschaft' and Spanish 'dominio' precisely mirror the semantic range. The term spans human political rule — the dominion stripped from defeated beasts (Dan 7:6, 12) — and divine eternal sovereignty — the dominion that 'shall not be destroyed' (Dan 7:14, 27). Nebuchadnezzar uses it to confess God's supremacy after his madness (Dan 4:3, 34), and Darius echoes the formula (Dan 6:26). The emphatic state שָׁלְטָנָא appears when the dominion is given to the saints (Dan 7:27), marking eschatological climax. 14×
