To withhold, hold back, restrain; in the Niphal, to be withheld or restrained from occurring
A verb of restraint and denial, used when someone or something is held back from its natural course. God withholds the fruit of the womb (Gen 30:2), rain (Amos 4:7), and good things (Jer 5:25); humans withhold bread from the hungry (Job 22:7) or hold back a sword from its work (Jer 48:10). Abigail blesses God for restraining David from bloodguilt (1 Sam 25:26, 34). The Niphal passive appears when showers are withheld (Jer 3:3) or wicked deeds are held in check (Job 38:15). Spanish 'detener' and French 'empêcher' both emphasize the preventive force, while the Arabic cognate 'manaʿa' carries the same core meaning of prohibition and restraint.
1. withhold, restrain, hold back — The Qal active sense: to deliberately withhold, restrain, or hold back something from someone. The subject exercises control -- God withholds rain (Amos 4:7) and fruit of the womb (Gen 30:2); Abigail praises God for restraining David from shedding blood (1 Sam 25:26, 34). 2. be withheld, be restrained — The Niphal passive sense: to be withheld, held back, or prevented from occurring. Used when the agent of restraint is backgrounded -- showers are withheld in Jer 3:3, the light of the wicked is restrained in Job 38:15, and offerings are cut off in Joel 1:13. Balak tells Balaam nothing should be withheld from his honoring (Num 22:16). French 'être retenu' and Spanish 'fue retenida' reflect this passive construction naturally. 4×
