To approach, draw near; to offer sacrifice; to bring someone before another (Aramaic verb in Daniel/Ezra)
An Aramaic verb found exclusively in Daniel and Ezra, carrying the core idea of drawing near. In its simplest Qal form, it describes physical approach — Daniel drawing near to an interpreter (Dan 7:16), or accusers coming forward before the king (Dan 3:8). The Piel and Hifil stems extend this into cultic territory: bringing offerings near to the altar (Ezra 6:17; 7:17). Most strikingly, in Daniel 7:13 the Son of Man is 'brought near' before the Ancient of Days — a presentation that transcends mere physical proximity and carries overtones of royal investiture.
Senses
1. to approach, come near (Qal) — Physical approach or drawing near to a person or place (Qal). English 'came near,' Spanish 'se acercaron,' and Hindi equivalents consistently render simple movement toward someone. Used five times in Daniel for approaching kings, interpreters, and the lions' den (Dan 3:8, 26; 6:12, 20; 7:16). 5×

2. to offer, present sacrifice (Hifil/Piel) — Offering or presenting sacrifice at the altar (Piel/Hifil causative). The cultic extension of 'bringing near' — sacrificial animals and offerings are brought to God's altar. Spanish 'ofrecieron/ofrecerás' and English 'offered/offering' confirm the sacrificial register. All three occurrences cluster in Ezra's temple-restoration context (Ezra 6:10, 17; 7:17). 3×

3. to bring near, present (a person) (Hifil) — Presenting a person before a superior (Hifil). A singular, theologically charged use in Dan 7:13 where the Son of Man is brought before the Ancient of Days. Spanish renders it passively as 'fue llevado' (he was brought), emphasizing the reverential escort rather than mere physical movement. This sense carries investiture and royal audience overtones distinct from both ordinary approach and sacrificial offering. 1×
