H6743a H6743a
To rush upon, come mightily; of the Spirit's sudden empowerment, fire breaking forth, or swift physical movement.
One of the most vivid verbs in the Hebrew Bible, used primarily for the Spirit of YHWH rushing upon individuals to empower them for extraordinary feats. Samson tears a lion apart when the Spirit 'rushes upon' him (Judg 14:6), and Saul is transformed when it 'rushes upon' him at Gibeah (1 Sam 10:10). Spanish 'vino con poder' (came with power) beautifully captures the irresistible, sudden descent. The root extends metaphorically to fire blazing forth (Amos 5:6) and literally to soldiers rushing across the Jordan (2 Sam 19:17).
Senses
1. to rush upon, come mightily upon (of the Spirit) — The Spirit of YHWH rushing or coming mightily upon a person, empowering them for heroic or prophetic action. This is the dominant and most theologically significant use, attested eight times across Judges and 1 Samuel. Spanish 'vino con poder' and French 'se precipita' both convey the sudden, overwhelming descent. Key passages: Judg 14:6, 19 (Samson), Judg 15:14 (Samson at Lehi), 1 Sam 10:6, 10 (Saul's transformation), 1 Sam 11:6 (Saul's righteous anger). 8×

2. to break out, blaze forth (of fire) — Fire or wrath breaking forth or blazing out suddenly, a metaphorical extension of the rushing root. Amos 5:6 warns 'lest he rush like fire upon the house of Joseph.' English 'breaks out' and Spanish 'se lance' convey the sudden eruption, while the French rendering 'prosperer' (prosper) appears to confuse this verb with the homonymous H6743b (succeed/prosper), underscoring the importance of distinguishing the two roots. 1×

3. to rush through, cross swiftly — Swift physical movement through terrain, as in soldiers crossing or rushing through a space. 2 Samuel 19:17 describes David's men rushing into the Jordan to escort the king. Spanish 'cruzaron' (they crossed) and French 'se precipita' (rushed) confirm rapid, purposeful traversal rather than divine empowerment or fiery eruption. 1×
