To meet or encounter someone; to meet together reciprocally; to come upon or run into by chance
A Hebrew verb synonymous with the more common paga' but carrying its own distinctive flavor of face-to-face encounter. When Jacob sends gifts ahead and coaches his servants on what to say 'when Esau meets you' (Gen 32:17), or when Abigail comes upon David in the wilderness (1 Sam 25:20), pagash captures the moment of intersection between two moving parties. Spanish encontrar and French rencontrer both echo the Latin-rooted idea of 'coming against.' The Nifal reciprocal form yields one of Scripture's most beautiful images: 'Mercy and truth have met together' (Ps 85:10), where abstract virtues are personified as parties who encounter each other. Proverbs uses the same reciprocal form to observe that rich and poor 'meet together' — the LORD made them both (Prov 22:2; 29:13).

Senses
1. meet, encounter (Qal) The basic Qal sense of meeting or encountering someone, used transitively with a direct object. Jacob's servant rehearses what to say when Esau 'meets you' (Gen 32:17), the LORD meets Moses at the lodging place (Exod 4:24), Aaron meets Moses at the mountain of God (Exod 4:27), and Abigail encounters David as she descends the hill (1 Sam 25:20). Spanish encontrar, French rencontrer, and German begegnen all map onto this sense of two parties coming face to face. The encounters may be planned or unexpected but are always personal and direct. 10×

2. meet together (Nifal reciprocal) The Nifal reciprocal sense: two parties meet each other, come together, or converge. The most celebrated instance is Psalm 85:10, where 'mercy and truth have met together' — a poetic personification of abstract qualities encountering one another in harmony. Proverbs 22:2 and 29:13 use the identical form to observe that rich and poor 'meet together,' both made by the LORD. Spanish se encontraron and German sich treffen capture the mutual, symmetrical quality of this reciprocal meeting, which is absent from the simple Qal.

3. encounter, come upon (Piel) A sense of coming upon someone by chance or encountering them in passing, distinguished from the deliberate encounters of sense 1 by its context of darkness and confusion. In Job 5:14, fools 'meet with' darkness in the daytime and grope at noon as in the night. The encounter here is not purposeful but accidental or fated. Spanish encuentran and the broader context of stumbling and groping mark this as an encounter that befalls rather than one that is sought.
