dominion, ruling authority; also concretely, rulers
Mimshal denotes the exercise of sovereign authority or dominion, and by extension can refer concretely to those who hold such power. In Daniel 11:3, a mighty king arises and rules with 'great dominion,' and in 11:5 the term describes the extent of a ruler's authority. The concrete plural usage in 1 Chronicles 26:6 designates the 'rulers' or leading men within Obed-edom's household. Spanish dominio and gobernantes capture the abstract and concrete senses respectively, while French gouvernement preserves the political nuance.

Senses
1. sense 1 Abstract sovereign authority or dominion — the exercise of ruling power over a territory or people. Used as a cognate accusative with mashal ('to rule') in Dan 11:3, describing a mighty king's vast dominion, and predicatively in Dan 11:5 of one whose authority exceeds another's. Spanish dominio and French gouvernement both render the political authority sense. Also attested in 2 Kgs 20:13 and 2 Chr 8:6 for royal administrative domains.
