V-Qal-Imperf-3fs  |  17× in 2 senses
To melt, dissolve, or cause to melt; used of earth dissolving at God's touch and hearts melting in fear.
A vivid verb depicting dissolution — whether physical melting or the collapse of human courage. When God touches the earth, it melts (Amos 9:5); when his voice thunders, the land dissolves (Ps 46:6). The inhabitants of Canaan 'melted' before Israel (Exod 15:15, Josh 2:9), and warriors' hearts dissolve like wax. The Arabic cognate māja ('to surge, as the sea') hints at the underlying image of solid things becoming fluid. In its causative uses, God softens rain-soaked earth (Ps 65:10) or dissolves a person in suffering (Job 30:22).

Senses
1. melt, dissolve (intransitive) Intransitive melting or dissolving — the earth, hearts, or peoples lose their solid form or resolve. Encompasses the Qal intransitive, Niphal, and Hitpael stems. The Song of the Sea declares the peoples 'melted' (נָמֹגוּ, Exod 15:15), and Rahab confirms that Canaan's inhabitants lost heart (Josh 2:9, 24). Psalm 46:6 pictures cosmic dissolution at God's voice. Spanish 'derretir' and French 'fondre' both capture the physical-to-metaphorical range. The Arabic cognate māja (surging waves) suggests the boundary between solid and liquid dissolving entirely. 14×

2. cause to melt, soften Causative melting or softening — God as agent dissolving or liquefying something. In Ps 65:10 God softens the earth with showers (תְּמֹגְגֶנָּה), a gentle agricultural image. By contrast, Job 30:22 uses the verb for God dissolving Job himself in the storm of suffering. Isaiah 64:7 may preserve a similar causative sense of God melting his people, though the text is debated. The shift from intransitive to causative underscores divine sovereignty: what melts on its own before God can also be deliberately dissolved by him.
