προΐστημι G4291
V-RPA-NMP  |  8× in 1 sense
To lead, manage, or preside over; to direct affairs with care and diligence.
A compound verb meaning literally 'to stand before,' proistemi carries the dual force of leading and caring. Paul uses it for church elders who 'preside' over the community (1 Thess 5:12; 1 Tim 5:17) and for household management as a qualification for overseers (1 Tim 3:4-5, 12). In Romans 12:8, it appears among spiritual gifts — the one who leads should do so with diligence. The Pastoral Epistles especially develop the parallel between governing a household well and governing God's church, making this verb a cornerstone of NT leadership vocabulary.

Senses
1. lead/manage/preside over To stand before others in a position of authority, managing, directing, or presiding over them with attentive care. Spanish 'presidiendo' and French 'presider' capture the formal governance aspect, while 'mantenerse' and German 'vorstehen' (to stand before) reflect the original spatial metaphor. Paul treats household management as the proving ground for ecclesial leadership: 'If someone does not know how to manage (proistemi) his own household, how will he care for God's church?' (1 Tim 3:5). In Rom 12:8, the participial form places leading alongside mercy and giving as a gift exercised 'with diligence.'
