V-PPA-GMP  |  23× in 2 senses
To hinder, prevent, or forbid; blocking action through obstruction or authoritative prohibition.
An important verb of restraint with a subtle two-sense structure. Both Spanish impedir and French empêcher cover the full range, but the contexts split clearly: one sense involves practical obstruction — being physically hindered from traveling (Rom 1:13; 1 Thess 2:18) or prevented from an action (Acts 8:36) — while the other carries authoritative force, as when Jesus says 'do not forbid the little children' (Matt 19:14; Mark 10:14). The authoritative sense appears especially in contexts of forbidding people from coming to Jesus or from exercising spiritual gifts.

Senses
1. hinder or prevent To hinder, obstruct, or restrain from proceeding or acting — practical prevention rather than authoritative command. German hindert and Spanish fui impedido capture this blocking sense. Paul 'hindered' from visiting Rome (Rom 1:13), the Ethiopian eunuch asking 'what hinders me from being baptized?' (Acts 8:36), and Pharisees who 'hindered' those entering the kingdom (Luke 11:52) illustrate twelve occurrences. 12×

2. forbid or prohibit To forbid or prohibit with authority, commanding that something not be done. Though French empêcher and Spanish impedir overlap with sense 1, the contexts reveal authoritative prohibition: Jesus rebuking disciples who 'forbid' children (Matt 19:14; Mark 10:14), and disputes about forbidding someone casting out demons (Mark 9:38–39). Eleven occurrences carry this commanding force. 11×
