A forceful compound verb (kata + kurieuō) meaning to dominate or lord it over someone, intensifying the base verb 'to rule' with the prefix kata- ('down upon'). Jesus explicitly contrasts Gentile rulers who 'lord it over' their subjects with the servant-leadership expected among his followers (Matt 20:25; Mark 10:42). Peter echoes this warning to elders not to domineer over those entrusted to them (1 Pet 5:3). Strikingly, in Acts 19:16 the same verb describes a demoniac physically overpowering the sons of Sceva, revealing the raw force embedded in the word.
