ἐγκόπτω G1465
To hinder, impede, or cut in on; to obstruct someone's progress or plans
Originally meaning 'to cut into' (from en + kopto), this verb came to signify obstructing or hindering someone's course of action. Paul uses it repeatedly to explain why his plans were thwarted: he was 'hindered' from visiting Rome (Rom 15:22) and Thessalonica (1 Thess 2:18). In Galatians 5:7, it evokes an athletic metaphor -- 'who hindered you from obeying the truth?' -- as if someone cut in during a race. Peter urges husbands to honor their wives so that their prayers may not be 'hindered' (1 Pet 3:7). Spanish 'estorbar/impedir' and German 'hindern' confirm the obstruction sense.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To hinder, obstruct, or impede progress, cutting in on someone's intended course. The athletic metaphor in Galatians 5:7 -- 'who cut in on you?' -- preserves the original sense of cutting into a path. Paul explains his delayed visits as having been 'hindered' by ministry demands (Rom 15:22) or by Satan (1 Thess 2:18). In 1 Peter 3:7, prayers themselves can be 'hindered' by broken marital relationships. Spanish 'estorbar' (to obstruct) and German 'hindern' consistently render the interference sense. Acts 24:4 uses it more delicately -- 'that I may not weary you' -- showing the word can shade toward imposition. 5×
