βῐάζω G0971
to force, to use violence, to suffer violence, to press forward forcefully, to be seized
This verb carries the fundamental meaning of using force or violence, whether actively (to compel, constrain) or passively (to suffer violence, be overpowered). Classical Greek used it for being hard-pressed in battle, forced into slavery, or compelled to act. The New Testament's two occurrences appear in one of Scripture's most debated sayings: Matthew 11:12 declares that 'the kingdom of heaven suffers violence' (or 'has been forcefully advancing'), and Luke 16:16 states that 'everyone is forcing his way into it.' Scholars debate whether this describes violent opposition to the kingdom or forceful entry by eager seekers. The verb's flexibility allows both readings.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Matthew 11:12 uses the passive form: 'the kingdom of heaven biazetai'—either 'suffers violence' from opponents or 'advances forcefully' in power. Luke 16:16 states 'everyone biazetai into it'—either 'forces their way in' with eager determination or 'tries to force it' through violence. Spanish 'se esfuerza/sufre violencia' and German 'βιάζεται' preserve both active and passive possibilities. The grammatical ambiguity may be intentional: from Jesus's days until now, the kingdom simultaneously faces violent opposition and attracts forceful, determined seekers who press into it despite resistance. 2×
