Classical Greek used it for being hard-pressed in battle, forced into slavery, or compelled to act. The New Testament's two occurrences appear in one of Scripture's most debated sayings: Matthew 11:12 declares that 'the kingdom of heaven suffers violence' (or 'has been forcefully advancing'), and Luke 16:16 states that 'everyone is forcing his way into it.'
