A noun of pure exultation, almost always tied to divine blessing or communal celebration. It regularly appears paired with simkhah ('joy'), forming a hendiadys of overflowing gladness -- as in the wedding songs silenced by judgment (Jer 7:34; 16:9; 25:10) or restored in promise (Jer 33:11). Isaiah uses it to picture salvation as 'oil of gladness' replacing mourning (Isa 61:3) and 'wells of salvation' drawn with joy (Isa 12:3). The German 'Freude' and French 'joie' capture its warmth, while Esther 8:16-17 shows it erupting as national relief after Haman's downfall.
