To hiss, whistle — a sharp sibilant sound expressing scorn over ruins or summoning agents from afar
The verb שָׁרַק (sharaq) describes a sharp, piercing sound — a hiss or whistle — used in two distinct senses. Most commonly it expresses derision at devastated places: passersby 'hiss' at Jerusalem's ruins (1 Kgs 9:8; Jer 19:8; 49:17; 50:13), at fallen Tyre (Ezek 27:36), and at Israel's desolation (Lam 2:15-16). This hissing blends contempt with shock. In a second usage, God 'whistles' to summon distant nations: 'He will whistle for them from the ends of the earth' (Isa 5:26; 7:18). Zechariah 10:8 redeploys the image positively — God whistles to gather His redeemed. Spanish 'silbar' and French 'siffler' cover both registers.
