Aramaic: to find or discover (Haphel active); to be found, be discovered, or come to light (Hitpeel passive).
This Aramaic verb, found exclusively in Daniel and Ezra, is the standard term for finding or discovering in Biblical Aramaic. In its Haphel (active) stem, it describes deliberate searching and locating -- Arioch finds Daniel to present him before the king (Dan 2:25), and officials search archives to find records of rebellion (Ezra 4:15, 19). In its Hitpeel (passive) stem, something is found or comes to light: extraordinary spirit was found in Daniel (Dan 5:11-14), no trace of the shattered statue could be found (Dan 2:35), and Belshazzar was weighed and found wanting (Dan 5:27). Spanish hallar ('to find') and fue hallado ('was found') neatly mirror the active-passive distinction.
Senses
1. to be found, be discovered — To be found, be discovered, or come to light (Hitpeel/passive). Used when something emerges upon examination or reveals itself without emphasis on the searcher's effort. Daniel 5:11-12 reports that excellent wisdom 'was found' in Daniel; Daniel 2:35 says no trace of the great image 'was found.' Daniel 5:27 delivers the devastating verdict: 'you have been weighed and found wanting.' Spanish fue hallado ('was found') and French a été trouvée consistently mark this passive discovery. The emphasis falls on the result -- what surfaces or fails to surface -- rather than on the act of seeking. 9×

2. to find, discover — To find, discover, or locate through active searching or encounter (Haphel/active). Arioch actively finds Daniel and brings him before Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 2:25). Ezra 4:15 instructs officials to search the records 'and you will find' evidence of rebellion. Ezra 7:16 speaks of silver and gold 'that you can find' in the province of Babylon. Spanish hallar and hallaremos ('we will find') capture the deliberate, agent-driven quality of this sense. The distinction from the passive Hitpeel is consistently maintained across all the translation traditions. 9×
