To go about, rove, range to and fro; of roaming, searching, and restless wandering
A verb of movement that ranges from purposeful traversal to aimless wandering. In its basic Qal form, it describes the people going about to gather manna (Num 11:8) and Satan roving through the earth (Job 1:7). The Polel intensification transforms this into eager, purposeful ranging — the eyes of the LORD running to and fro across the whole earth (2 Chr 16:9), or people desperately scouring for the word of God (Amos 8:12). Spanish shifts tellingly from 'vagar' (to wander) in the Qal to 'recorrer/correr' (to traverse/run) in the intensified forms. The lone Hitpael in Jeremiah 49:3 adds a note of panicked, restless flight.

Senses
1. go about, rove (Qal) Qal basic: to go about, rove, or traverse an area. Describes general movement through a space — the people dispersing to gather manna (Num 11:8), David's men going throughout the land (2 Sam 24:2, 8), and Satan roaming the earth (Job 1:7; 2:2). Spanish 'vagar/recorrer' and French 'aller au sujet de' capture the unhurried, traversing quality.

2. run to and fro, range eagerly (Piel) Polel/Piel intensive: to range eagerly to and fro, to run with purpose or desperation. The eyes of the LORD ranging throughout the earth seeking the faithful (2 Chr 16:9; Zech 4:10) define the purposeful end; Amos 8:12 shows the desperate end — people running north to east seeking God's word and not finding it. Spanish 'correr' (to run) and 'recorred' (range!) mark the intensified urgency. Daniel 12:4 prophesies that many will range to and fro and knowledge will increase.

3. wander restlessly (Hitpael) Hitpael reflexive-iterative: to wander restlessly, roving without direction. Only in Jeremiah 49:3, where the daughters of Rabbah are told to rush about in panic among the hedgerows. Spanish 'vaguen' (let them wander) and English 'run to and fro' suggest frantic, directionless flight — a darker shade of the root's roving sense.
