V-Piel-Imperf-2fp  |  6× in 1 sense
To wait, hope, look expectantly; a Piel verb expressing patient trust directed toward God or an anticipated outcome.
An Aramaism (compare Aramaic sebar 'to think, hope' and Syriac 'to believe, hope') used exclusively in the Piel stem to express patient, expectant waiting. Creatures look to God for food in due season (Ps 104:27; 145:15), while the psalmist personally declares 'I have hoped for your commandments' (Ps 119:166). In Esther 9:1, enemies 'hoped to' overpower the Jews but found their expectation reversed. Ruth 1:13 captures Naomi's poignant question: would her daughters-in-law really wait for sons not yet born? Spanish 'esperar' beautifully bridges both 'to wait' and 'to hope,' mirroring the Hebrew semantic range.

Senses
1. wait, hope, look expectantly Piel: to wait for, hope in, or look expectantly toward someone or something, expressing patient trust or anticipation. An Aramaism cognate with Aramaic sebar ('think, hope') and Syriac sbar ('believe, hope'). Used of creatures waiting upon God for sustenance (Ps 104:27, 'they all look to you'; Ps 145:15, 'the eyes of all wait upon you'), of personal hope in God's commandments (Ps 119:166), and of thwarted human expectation (Esth 9:1, enemies 'hoped to' dominate but were overthrown). In Ruth 1:13, Naomi asks whether her daughters-in-law would 'wait' for future sons, using the verb with pathos. Isaiah 38:18 states the dead cannot 'hope for' God's faithfulness. Spanish 'esperar' captures both the waiting and hoping dimensions, while English must alternate between 'hope,' 'wait,' and 'look.'
