Conj-w | V-Piel-Prtcpl-ms  |  5× in 1 sense
to praise, laud (Aramaic Pael); glorify with words of honor, used of praising God or idols
This Aramaic verb in the Pael stem means to praise or laud, appearing exclusively in Daniel. Daniel praises the God of heaven for revealing Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Dan 2:23), and the restored king praises the Most High after his humiliation (Dan 4:34, 37). The same verb is used negatively for praising idols of gold, silver, and stone (Dan 5:4, 23), creating a sharp theological contrast. The Spanish 'alabo/alabé' (I praise/I praised) and English 'praised/praising' consistently reflect doxological speech directed toward a deity.

Senses
1. sense 1 To praise or laud, directing words of glorification toward a deity. Daniel praises the God of heaven for revealed wisdom (Dan 2:23), and Nebuchadnezzar praises the Most High after his restoration (Dan 4:34, 37). The same verb indicts Belshazzar for praising lifeless idols instead (Dan 5:4, 23), sharpening the contrast between true and false worship. Spanish 'alabar' and English 'praise' uniformly reflect this doxological speech act.
