V-Piel-Imperf-3mp | 2ms  |  8× in 2 senses
To praise, laud, or extol (Piel); in the Hitpael, to glory in or boast about something.
A late Aramaism (compare Aramaic/Syriac shbach, 'praise') used almost exclusively in Psalms and Ecclesiastes. In its Piel form, it is a word of worship — 'praise him, all you peoples!' (Ps 117:1), where it stands alongside hallel as a near-synonym for liturgical acclamation. The Ecclesiastes usages add a surprising secular note: Qoheleth 'commends' mirth (Eccl 8:15) and 'praises' the dead (Eccl 4:2). The Hitpael reflexive shifts the focus inward — 'to glory in your holy name' (Ps 106:47 = 1 Chr 16:35) — where Spanish 'gloriarnos' and French 'à louer' both capture the self-directed exultation that distinguishes boasting from outward-directed praise.

Senses
1. praise, laud Piel: to praise, laud, or extol — predominantly directed toward God in liturgical contexts. Psalm 117:1 calls all nations to 'praise him' (parallel to hallel), Psalm 63:3 declares that 'lips shall praise you,' and Psalm 145:4 promises that one generation 'shall laud' God's works to the next. In Ecclesiastes, the same verb takes on a wisdom-literature flavor: commending mirth as the best thing under the sun (Eccl 8:15) or praising the already-dead over the living (Eccl 4:2). Spanish 'alabar' and French 'louer' consistently select standard praise vocabulary.

2. glory in, boast Hitpael reflexive: to glory in, boast, or take pride in something — with the preposition be- marking the object of boasting. In the doxological conclusion of Psalm 106:47 (= 1 Chr 16:35), the community asks to be gathered 'that we may glory in your holy name.' The Greek Septuagint renders this with (el)kauchasthai, 'to boast,' and Spanish 'para gloriarnos' (that we may glory) confirms the reflexive, self-directed character. This sense stands apart from Piel 'praise' by its focus on the worshiper's own exultation rather than outward acclamation of God.
