V-Qal-Perf-1cs  |  10× in 1 sense
To will, desire, or be pleased; used of divine and royal volition in Aramaic portions of Daniel.
An Aramaic verb appearing exclusively in the book of Daniel, expressing deliberate willing, desiring, or choosing. When used of God (Dan 4:17, 25, 32), it conveys sovereign authority over all earthly kingdoms—'He does according to His will.' When used of Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 5:19), it describes the absolute power of a king who could elevate or destroy at pleasure. The Spanish renderings quiere and quería and the German Willen all converge on this same core idea of purposeful volition, whether divine or human.

Senses
1. to will, to desire (Aramaic) To will, desire, or be pleased—expressing deliberate volition or sovereign purpose. In Daniel's Aramaic, this verb appears for both God's uncontestable will ('He does according to His will among the host of heaven,' Dan 4:35) and royal prerogative ('whomever he wished he killed, and whomever he wished he kept alive,' Dan 5:19). The cognate Syriac confirms the basic sense of inclination or desire. Daniel himself uses the first-person form when recounting his own desire to understand a vision (Dan 7:19). 10×
