H6476 H6476
To break forth in joyful song or shout; in Piel, to shatter or crush physically (bones)
Almost exclusively an Isaianic word of exuberant praise, calling mountains, ruins, and barren Zion to 'break forth' in ringing joy at God's redemption (Isa 44:23; 49:13; 52:9; 54:1). The underlying image is of something bursting open -- joy too great to contain. The Piel intensifies the physical dimension: in Micah 3:3, oppressive leaders are condemned for 'breaking' the people's bones like meat in a pot. Cognate Syriac preserves the joyous sense, while Arabic and Ethiopic emphasize the physical shattering, showing the semantic bridge between explosive joy and violent fracture.
Senses
1. break forth (in song/joy) — Qal: to break forth or burst out in joyful singing and exultation before YHWH. Found almost exclusively in Isaiah's restoration prophecies (Isa 14:7; 44:23; 49:13; 52:9; 54:1) and Psalm 98:4. German 'ausbrechen' (break out) and Spanish 'prorrumpid' (burst forth) both capture the eruption metaphor. Often paired with rinnah ('joyful shout'), the expression evokes irrepressible, corporate celebration. 8×

2. break, shatter (physically) — Piel intensive: to break or crush physically, specifically of shattering bones. In Micah 3:3 the prophets' accusation against Israel's leaders describes them butchering the people and 'breaking their bones' -- a visceral image of exploitation. Spanish 'quebraron' (they shattered) preserves the violent force. Only one occurrence, but the Piel intensification of the root's 'burst/break' semantics is unmistakable. 1×
