Conj-w | V-Hitpael-ConsecImperf-3fs  |  5× in 1 sense
to thrust, impel, stir; in Niphal/Hithpael, to be troubled or agitated in spirit
A verb whose Qal sense means to thrust or impel — used of the Spirit of Yahweh beginning to stir Samson (Judg 13:25). In the Niphal and Hithpael, the meaning shifts to inner disturbance: Pharaoh's spirit was troubled after his dreams (Gen 41:8), and Nebuchadnezzar's spirit was agitated so that sleep fled (Dan 2:1, 3). The psalmist uses the Niphal to express deep personal turmoil (Ps 77:4). Spanish 'se turbó' and German 'beunruhigt' both capture this restless anxiety.

Senses
1. sense 1 To thrust, impel, or stir — and in reflexive/passive stems, to be deeply troubled or agitated in spirit. The Qal describes divine impulsion of Samson by the Spirit (Judg 13:25). The Niphal/Hithpael express psychological disturbance: Pharaoh's troubled spirit after dreams (Gen 41:8), Nebuchadnezzar's agitated sleeplessness (Dan 2:1, 3), and the psalmist's restless anguish (Ps 77:4). French 'tressaillir' (to start, tremble) and Spanish 'turbado' reflect the involuntary, shaking quality of this inner upheaval.
