Ophel — the fortified mound or hill-spur within Jerusalem (and Samaria)
Designates a fortified mound or hill-acropolis, used almost exclusively for the southern spur of Jerusalem's eastern hill. Micah 4:8 addresses it as 'tower of the flock, Ophel of daughter Zion,' linking it to royal authority. Nehemiah records repairs to the Ophel wall (Neh 3:26–27), while Chronicles notes fortification projects by Jotham and Manasseh (2 Chr 27:3; 33:14). In 2 Kings 5:24, the term may refer to a similar citadel-mound in Samaria.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A fortified mound or hill-spur serving as an acropolis, primarily the ridge on the southern end of Jerusalem's Temple Mount extending toward the City of David. Used in Nehemiah's wall-repair accounts (Neh 3:26–27; 11:21) and Chronicler's fortification notices (2 Chr 27:3; 33:14). Spanish 'el Ofel' and English 'the Ophel' treat it as a proper toponym, while French and German retain the Hebrew in brackets, reflecting its specialized architectural-geographic meaning. 5×
