V-Nifal-Perf-3fs  |  7× in 1 sense
Be lacking, be missing, fail (Niphal/Piel); to be absent from where one should be, always used with negation.
A verb in Niphal and Piel stems meaning 'to be lacking, missing, or absent,' remarkably almost always occurring with a negative particle (lo'). This creates an emphatic affirmation of completeness: in 1 Samuel 30:19, nothing was 'missing' from what the Amalekites had taken; in 2 Samuel 17:22, not one person was lacking who had not crossed the Jordan. Isaiah 40:26 applies it cosmically -- God calls the stars by name and 'not one is missing.' Zephaniah 3:5 uses it of God Himself: morning by morning He renders justice and 'does not fail.'

Senses
1. be lacking, be missing, fail (Nifal/Piel) To be lacking, missing, or absent, typically negated to emphasize completeness or unfailing presence. In 1 Sam 30:19 David recovers everything and 'nothing was missing' (lo ne'dar) -- the Spanish 'faltaban' ('were missing') and French constructions preserve this sense of absence. 2 Sam 17:22 reports that by morning 'not one was lacking' who had not crossed the Jordan. Isaiah 34:16 assures that no wild creature 'is missing' from God's appointed judgment. Isaiah 40:26 applies it to the stars: God calls each by name and 'not one fails.' Isaiah 59:15 laments that truth 'has become lacking.' Zephaniah 3:5 declares that the righteous LORD 'does not fail' in administering justice. 1 Kgs 4:27 (Piel) states the governors 'let nothing be lacking.'
