destroy, tear down (Aramaic)
An Aramaic verb meaning to destroy or demolish, cognate with Syriac and related to the Hebrew root for tearing down. In Ezra, it describes Nebuchadnezzar's destruction of Solomon's temple. The Aramaic section of Ezra uses this term to narrate the historical cause of the temple's ruin before describing its reconstruction.

Senses
1. sense 1 The destruction of the Jerusalem temple by Nebuchadnezzar, described in Ezra 5:12: 'he destroyed this house.' The Aramaic narrative places this verb in the mouth of the Jewish elders explaining to Tattenai why they are rebuilding: their ancestors' sins provoked God to give them into the hand of the Babylonian king, 'who destroyed this house and exiled the people.'
