Give, bestow, grant (Aramaic); to hand over, pay, or confer authority, used in the Biblical Aramaic of Daniel and Ezra.
The Aramaic cognate of Hebrew natan, meaning 'to give, bestow, or grant.' Found exclusively in the Biblical Aramaic sections of Daniel and Ezra, it carries the full range of giving: divine bestowal of sovereignty (Dan 4:17,25,32 -- God 'gives' dominion to whomever He wills), requesting allowance of time (Dan 2:16), and paying tribute (Ezra 4:13; 7:20). The Spanish consistently renders it with 'dar' forms, while the French and German preserve the Aramaic morphology in their glosses, reflecting its formal, administrative register.
Senses
1. give, bestow — To give, bestow, or grant, encompassing both human acts of giving and divine bestowal of authority. In Dan 4:17,25,32 the verb expresses God's sovereign prerogative to 'give' (yitteninnah) earthly dominion to whomever He chooses -- a key theological assertion in the Aramaic court tales. Dan 2:16 uses it for Daniel requesting that the king 'give' him time. In Ezra 4:13 it refers to paying taxes ('they will not give tribute'), and Ezra 7:20 authorizes disbursement from the royal treasury. The range spans divine sovereignty, personal petition, and fiscal administration. 7×
