Pleasant, delightful — poetic adjective describing what brings deep enjoyment or aesthetic delight
The adjective נָעִים (naim) expresses loveliness, pleasantness, or delight — the quality that makes something deeply enjoyable. It is overwhelmingly a poetic word, flourishing in Psalms and Proverbs. David is called the 'sweet psalmist of Israel' (2 Sam 23:1), and Psalm 133:1 celebrates how 'pleasant' it is for brothers to dwell in unity. The Psalter praises God's name as pleasant (Ps 135:3) and declares that at God's right hand are 'pleasures forevermore' (Ps 16:11). Proverbs applies it to wise sayings kept ready on the lips (Prov 22:18). Spanish 'agradable/deleitoso' and French 'agréable' both capture the warm aesthetic tone.

Senses
1. pleasant, delightful Describing persons, experiences, or qualities that bring genuine delight and aesthetic pleasure. Applied to David and Jonathan as 'lovely and pleasant' in Saul's elegy (2 Sam 1:23), to the boundary-lines that fall in pleasant places (Ps 16:6), to the sweetness of praising God (Ps 135:3; 147:1), and to the profit of wisdom words kept ready on the lips (Prov 22:18). Job 36:11 promises that obedient years will be spent 'in pleasantness.' The word belongs to elevated, lyric register and never appears in legal or narrative prose. 11×
