riches, wealth, possessions; treasures (probably an Assyrian/Aramaic loanword)
A term for accumulated wealth and material possessions, appearing only in the plural (nekasim). Likely borrowed from Akkadian nikasu ('property, gain'), it carries a slightly formal, even exotic flavor in Hebrew. It often appears alongside osher ('riches') and kavod ('honor'), as in Solomon's request (2 Chr 1:11-12) and the Teacher's lament over wealth one cannot enjoy (Eccl 5:19; 6:2). Joshua 22:8 uses it for the livestock and spoil the Transjordan tribes carried home.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Material wealth, riches, and possessions viewed as accumulated property. Spanish 'bienes' and French 'possessions' capture the tangible, inventory-like quality. Frequently paired with osher and kavod to form a triad of prosperity (2 Chr 1:11-12; Eccl 6:2). In Ecclesiastes 5:19 God grants nekasim as a gift to be enjoyed; in Joshua 22:8 the term denotes cattle, silver, gold, and spoil distributed among the eastern tribes. 5×
