Homelessness, wandering, or the state of being driven out without refuge
This term describes the condition of being homeless or fugitive—wandering without stable shelter. Isaiah uses it when commanding God's people to bring 'the homeless poor' into their houses. Lamentations employs it twice to describe Jerusalem's misery: her wanderings during days of affliction, and the remembrance of affliction and wandering that embitters the soul. It captures not just physical displacement but the emotional and social desolation of having no place to belong or rest.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Homelessness or fugitive wandering. Isaiah 58:7 commands: 'Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house?' Lamentations 1:7 recalls 'all her treasures' Jerusalem had 'in the days of her affliction and wandering.' In 3:19, the speaker cries 'remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the gall.' The French 'errant' and Spanish 'vagabundeo' both emphasize the rootless, driven-out quality of this condition. 3×
