To press, squeeze, or thrust forcefully, often with violent or sexual connotations
This verb describes forceful physical pressure applied to objects or bodies. Its three occurrences span from the cultic (emasculated animals unfit for sacrifice in Lev 22), to the martial (Saul's spear thrust into the ground in 1 Sam 26), to the violently sexual (Ezekiel's graphic metaphor of Egypt's abuse of Jerusalem and Samaria in Ezek 23). The consistent element is forceful compression or penetration, whether squeezing, crushing, or pressing into place.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To press, squeeze, or thrust with force. Leviticus 22:24 prohibits offering animals whose testicles are 'bruised or crushed' (paralleled with 'torn' and 'cut'). In 1 Samuel 26:7, Saul's spear is found 'stuck' or 'thrust' into the ground at his head. Ezekiel 23:3 uses the term for sexual violence—breasts 'squeezed' in Egypt's idolatrous embrace. The multilingual glosses (bruised, stuck, pressed, clavada) reflect this range of forceful compression. 3×
