This Aramaic verb carries two distinct but related meanings: counting or reckoning, and appointing or assigning. Its most memorable appearance is in the handwriting on the wall — 'God has numbered your kingdom' (Dan 5:26) — where numbering implies bringing to an end. In its administrative sense, Nebuchadnezzar 'appointed' officials (Dan 2:24, 49; 3:12), and Ezra was commissioned to 'appoint' judges (Ezra 7:25). The Spanish glosses capture both sides well: 'ha-contado' (has counted) alongside 'nombra' (appoint).
