Possession, inheritance; landed property held as a hereditary right, especially territory granted by God.
Concentrating almost entirely in Deuteronomy and the conquest narratives, yerushah names land that belongs to a people by divine grant or ancestral right. Moses tells Israel not to provoke Esau's descendants, because 'I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession' (Deut 2:5), and the same formula appears for Moab (2:9) and Ammon (2:19). Joshua 1:15 extends the term to the Transjordanian tribes' allotment. In Jeremiah 32:8 it surfaces in Jeremiah's field purchase -- a sign of hope that property rights will be restored. Spanish 'posesion' and French 'heritage' both reflect the blend of ownership and hereditary right the Hebrew conveys.

Senses
1. possession, inheritance Landed property held as a hereditary possession, particularly territory granted by God. Dominates in Deuteronomy's dispossession accounts: Edom's Seir (Deut 2:5, 12), Moab (2:9), Ammon (2:19), and the Transjordanian allotment (3:20; Josh 1:15). Also in Judges 21:17 for Benjamin's inheritance, Jeremiah 32:8 for a redeemable field, and 2 Chronicles 20:11 for the land God gave Israel. 14×
