To set, place, or station something or someone; to establish a person in office or position
The Hiphil verb yatsag is a forceful synonym of the common Hebrew word sum ('to put'), but it carries a note of deliberate, authoritative placement. Jacob sets the striped rods before the flocks at the watering troughs (Gen 30:38), and the fleece is placed on the threshing floor by Gideon (Judg 6:37). When applied to persons, it takes on the connotation of formal appointment — Joseph sets his brothers before Pharaoh (Gen 47:2), and Judah pledges to set Benjamin back in his father's presence (Gen 43:9). Spanish poner and French placer both mirror its range, though neither quite captures the vividness the BDB lexicon notes as distinctive to this verb.

Senses
1. place or set physically The basic physical sense: to place, set, or put an object in a specific location. Jacob places the peeled rods in the water troughs before the flocks (Gen 30:38), Gideon places the fleece on the threshing floor (Judg 6:37), and David places the Ark inside the tent (2 Sam 6:17). German setzen and Spanish poner map directly. The emphasis falls on the deliberate, purposeful act of positioning a physical thing.

2. appoint or establish a person The personal-authoritative sense: to set a person in a role, present someone formally, or establish someone in a position. Joseph presents his brothers before Pharaoh (Gen 47:2), and Judah pledges to 'set' Benjamin before his father (Gen 43:9). In Job 17:6 the sufferer laments that God has made him a byword. Jeremiah 51:34 uses the image of being 'set down' as an empty vessel. Spanish poner and French placer extend naturally to this institutional usage.

3. station or leave in place The stative-resultant sense: to station, leave, or let remain in a fixed place, emphasizing the enduring state rather than the initial act. Hosea threatens to 'set her' like a wilderness (Hos 2:3), stripping away adornment and leaving the result. Moses asks Pharaoh to let the little ones remain (Exod 10:24), and Jacob offers to leave part of his household stationed behind (Gen 33:15). The focus is on the settled condition that follows placement.
