Adj-fp  |  8× in 1 sense
Beloved, dear, lovely; used of persons cherished by God and of places precious to the worshiper.
A poetic adjective expressing tender affection and preciousness, used both substantively and attributively. Moses blesses Benjamin as 'the beloved of YHWH' who dwells securely between God's shoulders (Deut 33:12). Isaiah sings of 'my beloved' using this word for the Lord as a vinedresser (Isa 5:1). The psalmist cries 'How lovely are your dwelling places!' (Ps 84:1), and Psalm 45 is titled 'a song of loves' using the feminine plural as an abstract noun. The range from personal devotion to aesthetic delight makes this word uniquely warm in Hebrew poetry.

Senses
1. beloved, dear one Beloved, dear, lovely -- expressing deep affection or aesthetic delight in a poetic register. Used substantively of persons loved by God or by the speaker: Benjamin is 'the beloved of YHWH' (Deut 33:12); the prophet addresses YHWH as 'my beloved' in the vineyard song (Isa 5:1); the psalmist's 'beloved ones' are those God delivers (Ps 60:5; 108:6); and God gives to His beloved in sleep (Ps 127:2). Used attributively of places: 'How lovely are your tabernacles!' (Ps 84:1). As a feminine abstract, it appears in Psalm 45:1 in the phrase 'a song of loves' (shir yedidot). Jeremiah 11:15 applies it to Judah as God's 'beloved' even in judgment. The French 'bien-aimé' and Spanish 'amado/amada' capture the warmth of endearment.
