Slaughter, butchering — the killing and preparation of animals for food or a feast; also mass killing in battle
The noun טֶבַח (tebach) covers the spectrum from domestic food preparation to large-scale slaughter. Joseph orders his steward to 'slaughter a slaughtering' (טְבֹחַ טֶבַח) when preparing a feast for his brothers (Gen 43:16). Proverbs personifies Wisdom as having 'slaughtered her slaughter' for a banquet (Prov 9:2). But the word also carries a darker register: Isaiah describes the eschatological day of the LORD as a 'slaughter in Bozrah' (Isa 34:2, 6), and Jeremiah and Ezekiel use it for the butchering of enemies (Jer 48:15; Ezek 21:15, 33). Spanish 'matanza' and French 'boucherie' both encompass the domestic and military uses.
Senses
1. slaughter, butchering — The act of slaughtering animals for food, a feast, or sacrifice, extending metaphorically to mass killing in warfare. Domestic feasting: Joseph's banquet preparation (Gen 43:16) and Wisdom's invitation (Prov 9:2). Military and prophetic: the day of the LORD's slaughter (Isa 34:2, 6), enemies led like lambs to slaughter (Jer 48:15; 51:40), and the 'sword of slaughter' (Ezek 21:15, 33). The 'house of slaughter' (בֵּית טֶבַח, Isa 14:21) evokes a slaughterhouse for the defeated. Spanish 'matanza' and English 'slaughter' both capture the word's dual domestic and violent registers. 12×
