To slaughter, butcher — killing an animal for food or sacrifice; extended to violent killing of people
The verb טָבַח (tavach) means to slaughter or butcher, primarily describing the killing of animals for consumption. Joseph orders his steward to 'slaughter an animal and prepare' a feast (Gen 43:16), Lady Wisdom 'has slaughtered her meat' for the banquet of understanding (Prov 9:2), and the stolen ox is 'slaughtered' by the thief (Exod 22:1 [Eng. 21:37]). Deuteronomy 28:31 envisions the covenant curse of watching one's ox slaughtered before one's eyes. The verb extends to the violent slaughter of people in contexts of war and judgment: Lamentations 2:21 mourns the young and old 'slaughtered' in Jerusalem's streets, and Ezekiel 21:15 [Eng. 21:10] speaks of a sword polished 'for slaughter.' Spanish 'degollar/matar' and French 'égorger' capture the visceral force.
