To be attached to, to love, to set one's affection or desire upon someone or something.
A verb expressing deep emotional attachment and desire, used both of human love and divine election. When Shechem's soul clung to Dinah (Gen 34:8), this is the word chosen. More strikingly, it describes why God chose Israel -- not because they were numerous, but because He 'set His love' upon them (Deut 7:7; 10:15). In Psalm 91:14 it is the believer's devotion to God that triggers divine protection. The Aramaic cognate means 'to bind,' revealing the physical metaphor beneath the emotional sense. French 'aimer' and Spanish 'deseó' reflect the range from love to longing.
Senses
1. be attached to, love, desire — To be emotionally attached to, to love, to set one's desire upon. The verb chashaq conveys a deep, binding affection -- the Aramaic cognate literally means 'to bind or fasten.' It covers human romantic desire (Gen 34:8, Shechem's attachment to Dinah; Deut 21:11, desire for a captive woman), God's sovereign love for Israel (Deut 7:7; 10:15, where YHWH 'set His love' upon the patriarchs and their descendants), and the believer's devotion to God (Ps 91:14). In 1 Kgs 9:19 it extends to Solomon's desire to build. Isa 38:17 uses it uniquely of God's loving deliverance of Hezekiah's soul from the pit. The multilingual glosses reveal the full range: Spanish 'deseó' (desired), French 'aimer' (to love), English 'delighted.' 8×
