Trembling, fearful; one who quakes from terror in battle or from reverent awe before God's word.
The verbal adjective chared describes a person in a state of trembling, whether from battlefield terror or from reverent awe before God. Gideon's famous reduction of his army begins by sending home every chared -- everyone trembling with fear (Judg 7:3). Eli's heart trembles for the ark of God (1 Sam 4:13). But in Ezra and Isaiah, the word takes on a profoundly positive meaning: those who 'tremble at God's word' are the faithful remnant, the devout who take divine revelation seriously (Ezra 9:4; 10:3; Isa 66:2, 5).
Senses
1. trembling, fearful — Trembling, fearful, or awe-struck -- a verbal adjective covering both physical trembling from fear and reverent trembling before God. Spanish distinguishes 'temblando' (trembling) from 'los que tembláis' (you who tremble), capturing the range. In Judg 7:3 it parallels 'afraid' (yare) as grounds for military dismissal. In 1 Sam 4:13 Eli's heart trembles with anxiety for the ark. The Ezra-Isaiah usage (Ezra 9:4; 10:3; Isa 66:2, 5) transforms trembling into a mark of spiritual devotion -- those who chared at God's commandments are his true servants. 6×
