V-Pual-Prtcpl-ms  |  4× in 1 sense
To carve, engrave; cut figures into a surface; mark a boundary or limit
A rare Hebrew verb (related to haqaq, 'to inscribe') appearing only in the Pual and Hithpael stems. In its Pual participle form, it describes carved or engraved images on temple doors (1 Kgs 6:35) and on walls in prophetic visions of idolatry (Ezek 8:10; 23:14). In Job 13:27, the Hithpael conveys God 'inscribing a limit' around the soles of Job's feet. The semantic range moves from physical carving to metaphorical boundary-setting.

Senses
1. sense 1 Carving or engraving figures on a surface, used of both legitimate temple decoration and illicit idolatrous imagery. The Pual participle mehuqqeh describes carved work on Solomon's temple doors (1 Kgs 6:35) and the abominable images Ezekiel sees scratched into the temple walls (Ezek 8:10) and the Chaldean figures that seduced Oholibah (Ezek 23:14). In Job 13:27, the Hithpael shifts to marking a boundary: 'you engrave a mark around the soles of my feet.' The multilingual glosses reflect both domains: English 'carved' / 'set-a-limit,' Spanish 'grabados' / 'trazas-limite,' confirming the dual semantic field of artistic inscription and boundary demarcation.
